Aphaea was a Greek goddess who was worshipped exclusively at this sanctuary, built ca. 500 BC. However, Its history can be traced back to the Late Bronze Age (14th Century BC)

The mythology associates Aphaea with Britomartis who was the daughter of Zeus and half-sister of Artemis. Britomartis was pursued by King Minos of Crete who had fallen in love with her. In order to escape him she jumped into the sea but was caught in the net of fishermen who took her towards Aegina on their boat. However, a fisherman was also captivated by her beauty and wanten her for his own.

This time Britomartis successfully fled onto Aegina and seeking the help of goddess Diana, she vanished into the woods. When the fishermen arrived on the spot, they found only a statue. The word “Aphaea” derives from Greek meaning 'invisible.'

The temple of Aphaea is located at an equal distance from the Acropolis in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. These three great Temples form a sacred Triangle between North, East, and South.
